The harvest festival arrived like an autumn breeze, cool and refreshing. The entire day was filled with constant entertainment and activities. Unusually giddy, Jade strolled through the upper city streets. This was the longest she’d spent outside the castle gates since her unpleasant encounter. Still somewhat nervous, Jade did feel relatively safe surrounded by the five soldiers. It was all thanks to Alec. Without him, she would have missed this entire event.
During the weeklong celebration Jade didn’t leave the upper most tier of Stafford. The time flew by in a happy blur. There was so much to entertain. Several of the days were spent with the Thornbrooks.
On Saturday, the last day of the festival, Jade’s favorite children came to the castle. To Linus’s great delight, Alec took him on a tour of the training hall and armory. Afterwards they practiced with the same wooden swords Jade and Alec used not too long ago.
Standing on the edge of the field with the three younger children Jade smiled. In her mind’s eye she saw Alec dropping to the grass and pretending to be dead.
Never before had he done something so playfully dramatic. The behavior was out of character. Jade then recalled the teasing smirks he wore more and more frequently. Underneath, he seemed to have a charming sense of humor. Perhaps this was the real man without the burden of his chains.
Once the swords play ceased, Jade couldn’t resist taking Page and Lia shopping. The boys opted to stay with Alec, so Jade strolled along studying the various stands for the umpteenth time. Listening to the girls chattering away in their cute new dresses was the highlight of the week. On one of the side streets there was a colorful stand selling beads and lengths of ribbon. With a bright grin, Jade brought ribbons matching the girls’ dresses. After tying the long silk pieces of cloth through their golden hair Page and Lia insisted on doing the same for Jade. A dark green jade one, the color of her eyes, caught her attention. Sitting patiently Jade waited for the girls to weave the ribbon through her hair as they mimicked the style she did for them. Once completed, they set out again to explore the shops.
Before long daylight melted into darkness and the stars shined in the sky. Fires burned all around the castle grounds lighting the courtyard with their welcoming glow. Tables were set up in the cobblestone courtyard as well as in the massive dining hall within the castle. People flowed freely between the two places enjoying the music and feast set up for special guests and all of the castle staff.
As the meal progressed, the liveliest numbers began to fill the manor. People of all ages and classes began to dance in the open space reserved at the center of the great hall. This was the only time in Stafford that involved an event where the classes mixed so freely. Though never forgotten, for a few brief hours some of the social barriers could be lowered at least a little in a celebration which unified the people.
